TOPIC: “Jonker Sailplanes: JS1, 18-21M, Self Launcher Development”
Uys Jonker is the managing director of Jonker Sailplanes (Pty) Ltd. and cofounder of the company, along with his brother Attie and aerodynamicist Johann Bosman. He completed college-prep studies in 1989 as the top student in his graduating class and went on to the North West University where he completed a B.Sc degree (mathematics) in 1992 and a B.Eng degree in 1995, both cum laude. From 1995 to 1999 he did engineering work on the Rooivalk attack helicopter and Cheetah programs at Denel Aviation.
Uys (pronounced “Ace”) obtained his glider pilot’s license in 1992, a commercial pilot’s license (fixed wing) in 1998 and is currently the Class I Certification Test Pilot at Jonker Sailplanes. He has represented South Africa six times at World Gliding Championships (including Uvalde, Texas, in 2012) and finished in the top 10 on three occasions. His career highlights were piloting the JS1 on its maiden flight, as well as obtaining a Silver Medal in the 2010 World Gliding Championships held in Hungary.
