TOPIC: “Improving the Safety of Low Flying Aircraft in the Vicinity of Unmanned Aircraft Systems”

This presentation will provide an overview of unmanned aircraft system technologies and rules/regulations, while highlighting initial results of a technology for increasing the safety of manned aircraft when flights are conducted in the vicinity of unmanned aircraft. The method involves the deployment of an elevated, high visibility, beacon system at the location of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) flight operations, to enhance aircraft pilot awareness that UAS are operating in a given air space.

Wayne Woldt is an Associate Professor of Biological Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has been conducting research on unmanned aircraft under FAA authorization for three years. Wayne has a private pilot rating for single engine land, and glider with self-launch endorsement, and a commercial hot air balloon rating.
