Based upon 50 hours of flying in the Lithuanian World Championships with Phil Gaisford, it became apparent that the Europeans had formalized some competition techniques which were obvious but new to us. The simplest was: Always start with all the vents open and finish with all the vents closed. Yes, the loggers use cockpit static and the vents can give you a 30 to 50-ft. margin!
Some of the techniques are readily applicable to everyday cross-country soaring. I will fully investigate one such technique that is relevant to: climbing off tow, thermaling with company, climbing to final glide, etc.
Come on down!
